Lessons from Joseph

The life of Joseph is one of the most memorable and impactful Bible stories; it helped shape our faith as children. This Herald issue focuses on many lessons for our Christian walk. Joseph’s journey speaks to us through the ages, beginning with his father’s favor, rejection by his brothers, slavery, imprisonment in Egypt, and finally, victory in God’s providence and power.

The following articles reveal lessons for the Gospel Age church through Joseph’s example — lessons in personal growth, obedience, integrity, mercy, honor, and prophetic understanding. Like us, Joseph was a beloved child of God, blessed by the power of faith. We hope you will reflect on this review of Joseph’s experiences with comfort in knowing the love of God revealed to us through struggle.

Joseph, A Type of Christ considers how Joseph’s life in Egypt typifies the life of Jesus. It includes lovely insights into Joseph’s being sold into slavery, his authority in Potiphar’s house, his imprisonment, and his ascension to second in command of Pharaoh’s kingdom.

Joseph, A Type for Spiritual Growth views Joseph’s faith, integrity, humility, and obedience as pictures of our Lord Jesus. Joseph accepted his setbacks and did not lose faith in God or His promises.

A Double Inheritance in the Land discusses the twelve tribes of Israel vs. a slightly different list that God gave to Moses. Why did Joseph receive the firstborn blessing? It is a fascinating deep dive into the long‑lasting results of obedience vs. sin.

The Sins of Joseph’s Brothers shows how Joseph’s brothers followed the depravities of their flesh: disrespect, hate, jealousy, deception, and greed. Joseph intentionally let go of resentment and anger. God’s messages for us are Joseph’s forgiveness, mercy, and love.

Joseph’s Faith at Work considers Joseph’s obedience to God through struggle. Joseph was in trouble, and he desperately sought answers. Answers from God surrounded him, but he could only see them through the eye of faith. Like Joseph, our works should follow our faith, not the realities of our environment.

The Prophet that Hath a Dream examines the six dreams that changed Joseph’s life: two of his own, two of fellow prisoners, and two of Pharaoh. Joseph’s dreams became his anchor. How do the words of Jeremiah, Amos, and the Apostle Peter link us and our faith with Joseph’s dreams?

Joseph in Egypt shares prophetic details linking Joseph with Jesus. Joseph’s brothers sent him into Egypt, as Israelites gave Jesus to the Romans. Joseph’s brothers came to him in Egypt for help, as Israel today receives help from Jesus.

We trust you will be blessed and edified by this collection of articles!
