In the Beginning – Our Lord’s Memorial

The annual observance of our Lord’s Memorial and his sacrifice on the cross gives us the privilege to once again focus on God’s indescribable gift. We marvel that “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NASB). We similarly marvel at the Logos’ willingness to humble himself to be made flesh and die on the cross that all mankind might live (Philippians 2:6-8). “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing” (Revelation 5:12 NASB).

Our Memorial issue begins with The Vital Life of Love which focuses on the fellowship — koinonia — that we share as members of the body of Christ, as we feast on the benefits provided by Christ’s sacrifice.

Next, Jesus, Lord of Life considers four of the miracles Jesus performed during his earthly ministry and how they revealed his authority over nature, evil spirits, disease and even death.

The Bread and Cup reviews how hints of our Lord’s life of sacrifice can be found in the three phases of Joseph’s life in Egypt, and Melchizedek offering bread and wine to Abraham.

Jesus on the Cross shows how Jesus’ time on the cross corresponded to the daily, morning and evening, sacrifices of the unblemished lamb under the Tabernacle arrangement. It also connects Elijah’s confrontation with the priests of Baal to the cross.

Freedom Through Christ explains how the liberation of the Hebrews from Egyptian slavery pictures the greater liberation of the entire human family from the bondage of sin and death and how this deliverance reveals God’s attributes of love, justice, wisdom and power.

Removing Leaven from our Characters explains why Israel had to remove leaven from their households when celebrating the Passover, and how leaven pictures the various types of sin that the Christian must remove from their character.

Our Lord’s Memorial reviews many of the final lessons Jesus provided to his disciples during the last night of his earthly ministry, which are found in John chapters 13-17.

We hope, by the Lord’s grace, that this issue will help as we prepare our hearts and minds to remember the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, who as the lamb of God takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
